BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) Certification

The BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) certification is an early-career credential for workers in the home performance industry. This certification gives a great entrance to the industry while providing a clear path for professional growth.

What is the Building Analyst Technician Certification?

The BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) certification is an early-career credential for workers in the home performance industry. This certification gives a great entrance to the industry while providing a clear path for professional growth.

A BA-T's work includes data collection and diagnostic testing for a whole-home assessments. The BA-T's skills and knowledge include: buildings & their systems, testing & data collection, and industry standards.

The BA-T is earned by passing a field test with oral questions. BPI's Building Science Principles Certificate of Knowledge (BSP) is a prerequisite for the BA-T certification exam. You can learn more about how to earn the BSP here.

Get Certified as a Building Analyst Technician

  1. Read the BA-T Certification Scheme Handbook, Field Guide, and Job Task Analysis for the Building Analyst Technician certification.
  2. Training (optional): BPI does not require training and is not affiliated with any training centers. However, individuals that complete training typically perform better on BPI exams. Most BPI Test Centers offer training.
  3. Schedule your exams with a BPI Test Center in your area.
  4. Take your Building Analyst Technician Exam. This is a field exam which includes oral questions. There is no written exam.
  5. Test Scores: After taking the field exam, you should see your results in your candidate account within 2-4 weeks.
  6. Certification: If successful, your certification will be available for print or download in your BPI candidate account

Exam and Testing Knowledge List

Standards of reference for the Building Analyst Techniciancertification exams include:

Field exam: Hands-on exam with oral questions. Please note that the exam contains gated items (below) that must be completed successfullyto pass the exam, regardless of any other exam score.

  • Candidate prepared combustible gas and CO measurement instruments for use according to ANSI/BPI‐1200
  • Candidate sampled indoor ambient CO levels
  • Candidate sampled indoor ambient air for combustible gas levels on one floor of the house
  • Candidate monitored ambient CO levels in the CAZ during all combustion safety testing and stated results
  • Candidate set combustion appliances to pilot or standby to ensure they do not fire during the blower door test.

Time limit: 4 hours
Passing score: 70% or higher
Processing time for exam results: 2-4 weeks

Recertification

BPI Building Analyst Technicians must recertify every three (3) years.

You may bypass the recertification exam by providing documentation of 1,000 hours of verified work experience during your current certification cycle.
