Carl D. Orio
Chairman, Water Energy Distributors, Inc. Certified IGSHPA Instructor, Certified Geothermal Designer
Mr. Orio started his involvement with geothermal heat pumps in 1974 as founder and President of WESCORP. There he manufactured approximately 2,000 geothermal heat pumps and distributed them throughout the northern US and Canada until 1981. Since that time he has been a geothermal heat pump systems designer, and has been involved in well over 10,000 geothermal heat pump installations, both commercial and residential. WESCORP has stayed in the family, under a new name and leadership, and has continued to be one of the largest ground source heat pump distributors in the Northeast.
He is a Certified GeoExchange Designer (Cert. # 28) and a Certified Geothermal Instructor (IGSPHA). He is a full member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and has been a past member of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association’s (IGSPHA) Advisory Broad, serving as chairman of several sub-committees. In addition to his service in various committees and organizations, Mr. Orio is a co-author of the New York City “Geothermal Heat Pump Manual” and has contributed to ASHRAE transactions and handbooks. On multiple occasions he has authored and nationally spoken at ASHRAE, IGSHPA, Association of Energy Engineers, National Geothermal Resources Council and National Ground Water Association conferences. Mr. Orio has also been a contributor to several nationally recognized software programs for geothermal and mechanical systems.
Mr. Orio has been a geothermal consultant for over 70 Power Utilities, the US Department of Energy, U S Park Service, NY City Dept. of Design & Construction as well as numerous engineering firms in the Northeastern United States and Canada. His geothermal consulting activities have included designs for closed loop, standing column well and open earth coupling applications as well as trouble shooting and teaching on the diverse subject.
