WEEK 1 - Introduction to Geothermal Systems
Assignments should be completed by February 5, 2010
Very few people know what geothermal heat pumps are and how they work. This week we lay the groundwork by introducing the most common terms and providing a baseline understanding of the technology.

WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. Download the Powerpoint Slides - this will help you follow along with the video sections you will see in the course. Click here to download
  2. Read 'How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work' Click here to download
  3. Watch Video (use printed slides to follow along)
  4. Assignment: Go to the discussion board and click on 'Week 1 Introductions'. Reply to the message and tell us who you are and what you're hoping to learn in this class. Your instrctor and your classmates will see your response. Click here for the board
  5. OPTIONAL: Read 'Geothermal Survival Kit' Click here to download
  6. OPTIONAL: Submit Questions for the Instructor, or participate in the class discussion board Click here for the board

WEEK 2 - Understanding Geothermal Heat Pump Mechanics
Assignments should be completed by February 12, 2010
"How can you use an earth temperature of 50 degrees to head my house to 70 degrees?" This section will help you answer that fundamental question many of your customers and colleagues want to know. Understanding the heat pump itself is critical for communicating why geothermal systems are not magic and why geothermal systems are comfortable and reliable.

WEEK 2 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. Read 'How Heat Pumps Work' Click here to download
  2. Watch Video (use printed slides to follow along)
  3. OPTIONAL: Submit Questions for the Instructor, or participate in the class discussion board Click here for the board

WEEK 3 - Deep Dive on Ground Coupling Options: Closed Loop, Open Loop, and Standing Column
Assignments should be completed by February 19, 2010
The ground coupling is what makes a geothermal system so efficient - it also adds cost and complexity to the project. Making informed decisions about your ground coupling options can have huge cost and performance implications for both residential and commercial projects. This section helps you understand the pros and cons of each.

WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. Watch Video (1:56:20 Minutes - use printed slides to follow along)
  2. OPTIONAL: Submit Questions for the Instructor, or participate in the class discussion board Click here for the board

WEEK 4 - Big Picture Trends - Get to Know How the GHP Industry Works
Assignments should be completed by February 26, 2010
It's not enough to understand the technical side of geothermal heat pumps. To operate in the real world you need to understand how GHP's place in the building industry and get to know the equipment manufacturers, government agencies, and industry associations that drive the market.

WEEK 4 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. Read HeatSpring's Geothermal Business Road Map Click here to download
  2. Read NREL's 'Hurdles to GHP Adoption' Click here to download
  3. Read GHP report with market data Click here to download
  4. Get to know the names of different manufacturers Click here to download
  5. Find Tax Incentives in your state: Click here
  6. HOMEWORK: Find and read one full discussion thread on the GeoExchange Forum: http://forum.geoexchange.org/
  7. OPTIONAL: Submit Questions for the Instructor, or participate in the class discussion board Click here for the board

WEEK 5 - Designing a Geothermal System
Assignments should be completed by March 5, 2010
Proper system design is critical for keeping the initial investment low, and for making sure the system operates as advertised. This is not a black art; there are some relatively simple calculations that geothermal designers make to design reliable systems for residential and commercial buildings.

WEEK 5 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. IMPORTANT! Register for 'Capstone Lecture' & Mark your Calendar (Call 800-393-2044 if you have trouble) Click here to register

WEEK 6 - Marketing & Selling Geothermal Systems
Assignments should be completed by March 12, 2010
Everyone has a sales component to their job, even if you think you don't. Whether you're marketing or selling GHPs to customers, evaluating someone else's design, or a prospective owner/operator, you need to understand how people think about GHPs and how purchase decisions are made.

WEEK 6 ASSIGNMENTS - (click here to view)
  1. IMPORTANT - Complete & submit your Entry Level Professional Exam: 30 Questions, Mulitple Choice and True False
  2. IMPORTANT - Attend your Capstone Lecture March 12, 2010 at 1pm EST
  3. Watch Video - 39:47 Minutes
  4. Use Geothermal System Cost Payback Tool to estimate upfront costs and operating costs of a geothermal system for your home Click here
  5. HOMEWORK (Residential): Call three contractors in your area about putting a system in your home. Are they responsive? Do they know how to answer your questions? How do their bids compare to the calculator? What would you do differently? Link to HeatSpring Listings
  6. HOMEWORK (Commercial): Call the engineer (or architect, or client) you worked with on your most recent project and ask why they did or did not select geothermal heat pumps. What is the engineer's biggest concern when it comes to GHPs? How might you address that concern?
