This is course is for anyone interested in solar PV that needs a quick, but useful, review of the basics. You'll learn the basic skills of: electricity and solar basics, sizing conductors, sizing the array and estimating power production, and how to communicate the financial value to a homeowner. You will have a final assignment that will test your knowledge of all of the materials to make sure you learned it.

Agenda

Intro to Electricity and Solar Basics -

Remember, this introductory course is for people with no background. If you have an electrical background, this will be a review. If you're brand new, this will be required reading. In this section, you'll get a refresher of electricity and solar basics so that you understand the relationship between volts, amps, watts, and ohms, voltage drop, the relationship between Temperature + Voltage, and Irradiance + Current.

Intro to Sizing Conductors -

Sizing conductors is key to a efficient and well operating solar PV project. It's also necessary for pulling solar permits, and 3 line diagrams, and a lot of code is related to sizing conductors. In this section, you'll learn the basics of sizing conductors and the relevant code.

Intro to Array Sizing and Estimating Power Production -

One of the most critical elements to solar PV design is properly sizing the array to meet the limitations of the customer and site. In this section, we'll discuss the how to size an array and estimate power production. Estimating power production is the foundation of determining the economic value of the array.

Intro to Solar Code - NEC 690

Understanding NEC 690 is key for an project manager, engineer, or installer. We'll go over the basics of solar code and a quiz, so you can determine how much you know, and where you need to study.

Intro to Solar Economics, Sales and Site Visits -

For solar marketing and sales people, you need to understand the factors that impact the economics of a sales project. We'll also go over sales basics, how to frame proposals correct, and strategies and tools for completing site visits. This section will be filled with tools; financial models, sales proposal creation, and a site visit checklists.

Self-Assessment and 1 on 1 Call -

The point of this course is to help you with your specific situation and goals, depending your background. Fill out this quick self-assesment and schedule a 1 on 1 call with the instructor.

Advanced Solar Training + Post Course -

After you finish this course, if you need any more advanced or additional training, you have a number of options.

Chris Williams works with HeatSpring developing products and managing online content. Chris is a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer and an IGSHPA Accredited Geothermal Installer. He has installed over 300kW of solar PV systems, tens of residential and commercial solar hot water systems and 50 tons of geothermal equipment. Chris is the Chairman of the Government Relations Committee of New England Geothermal Professional Association and he consults with renewable energy companies on sales, marketing and design.
